Taiwanese Teen Dies After 40-hour Dialo III Marathon

The years of anticipation for Diablo III have brought about a number of marathon play sessions since its release on May 15, but one fan's obsession with the game has proven fatal.

An 18-year old Diablo III player in Taiwan was found dead recently after a 40-hour marathon session with the game, reports the Australian Associated Press.

The player, who has only been identified as Chuang, reportedly booked a room at his local Internet café before diving into the game, not stopping for sleep or food the entire time. An employee of the café found him passed out on a table Sunday.

He woke up when approached, but collapsed after a few steps and was rushed to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy is pending, but authorities noted that the long period of sitting still could have created blood clots, which proved fatal.

Sadly, it's not the first game-marathon-related death in Taiwan this year. In February, Chen Rong-yu had a fatal heart attack while playing in an Internet café in Taipei while playing online smash hit, League of Legends. Fellow players, though, didn't notice he had died for another nine hours.

Deaths in Internet cafes are rare, but happen from time to time when players concentrate so intensely on their games, that they ignore factors like the body's need for sleep and food.

Last year, a 30 year-old Chinese gamer died after staying up for three consecutive days, barely eating or drinking anything. And last August, 20 year-old Chris Staniforth suffered a pulmonary embolism after a marathon session on his Xbox.

The deaths underscore the risk of game addiction, which more and more people are becoming worried about as the industry grows.

New Purple Crab Species Discovered in Philippines

The biologically diverse but ecologically-threatened Philippines is found to be the home of four new species of freshwater crab which is bright purple in color. These tiny purple crab species burrow under boulders and roots in streams, which feeds on dead plants, fruits, carrion and small animals in the water at night.

Found only in lowland-forest ecosystems in the Palawan island group, most of the tiny crustaceans have purple shells, with claws and legs tipped red.

Scientists began extensive investigations of similar freshwater crabs in the area in the late 1980s, when one new species was found -- the Insulamon unicorn.

US-based Conservation International lists the Philippines as one of 17 countries that harbors most of Earth's plant and animal life.

Specie name:
  • Insulamon magnum (53  by 41.8 millimetre)
  • Insulamon porculum (33.1 by 25.1 millimetres)
  • Insulamon palawense (new)
  • Insulamon johannchristiani (new)

Does Everybody Understands That Touching Whale Sharks Is Prohibited?

I posted here in this blog about the Oslob Whale Sharks and how it boost the tourism industry in the town. I don't really know how the people responsible in this activity briefs the tourist that are going to see the whale sharks. All I know is that they have to conduct an orientation first on the dos and don'ts when it comes to handling whale sharks. And the most emphasized thought on the orientations is that never to touch the whale sharks.

I don't really know the reason why it is prohibited to touch whale sharks. I tried to search on the net but I can't find a reliable source. So lets just think that this rule is for the safety of the creatures. And we have to obey that because after all those creatures are living peacefully without the people around them.

But what is shocking is that not all the tourist are obeying this prohibition. See the images below that shows how some people interact with whale sharks which is not really a good example.

See the images above? How did this thing happen? Tour guides are suppose to prohibit the visitors in touching the whale sharks but the image which was taken just last March 31, 2011, the guides are the ones helping the visitors to touch the poor creatures.

What can you say about this guys? What should be the right thing to describe these people harassing the gentle giants?

2012's Earth Hour Extends To Outer Space

This year’s Earth Hour, an event where people and businesses worldwide turn off lights to raise awareness about climate change, will extend to outer space for the first time. World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the event’s organizer, said the one-hour switch-off will reach the International Space Station (ISS), a habitable artificial satellite in the low earth orbit. Earth Hour astronaut-ambassador Andre Kuipers will be at the ISS to watch over the planet as lights switch off on March 31.

WWF is hoping to make this year’s Earth Hour the “largest environmental celebration in human history” with the help of digital media. Earth Hour founder and executive director Andy Ridley said last year’s event reached 1.8 billion people across the globe. He says that "the state of the planet affects each and every one of us".

PH Earth Hour

Ridley is set to celebrate this year’s Earth Hour in the Philippines, which topped global town and city participation levels for three straight years. Switch-off ceremonies in the country will be held in Makati, Cebu and Davao, although other areas are expected to support the event as well.

At 6:30 p.m., glow-in-the-dark dance troupe Bailes de Luces and the Caracol dancers will lead an Earth-themed parade which will start at the Makati fire station and will end at Ayala Tower One. From there, WWF Philippines national ambassador Rovilson Fernandez will host a program with performances from “Pilipinas Got Talent” Season 3 finalist El Gamma Penumbra and other groups.

In Cebu City, local Sinulog dancers will start a parade at Fuente Osmeña Circle from 5:30 p.m. onwards. Candles will be lit and biodegradable sky lanterns will be released. Meanwhile, in Davao, WWF Philippines national ambassador Marc Nelson will host a program which features a tribal-themed parade around SM Davao at 6:30 p.m. Black-light and fire dancers will also perform specialized routines.

Earth Hour Theme (‘I will if you will’)

The theme for this year’s Earth Hour is “I will if you will” as organizers strive to encourage people to make a promise to help save the environment.

Nelson, an athletic celebrity, has pledged to “swim with sharks in a panda costume and plant trees underwater while munching on a carrot” if 5,000 of his Twitter followers pledge to avoid plastic and instead reuse shopping bags. Fernandez, on the other hand, has pledged to run races clad in a panda costume until next month if 5,000 of WWF Philippines’ 23,000 online fans will use the stairs instead of the elevator for a full month.

Other pledges include letting children play video games longer over the summer break if they remember to turn off the lights and fans when leaving the room, and recycling if friends promise to switch to energy-efficient bulbs.

"Noynoying" Caught The Foreign Media

A new form of protest called "noynoying" is spreading not only in the streets but also online, as militants accuse President Aquino of not doing anything about the nation's problems.  Malacañang appears to be doing damage control, but the foreign media has already picked up the story.

This new form of protest even made it to The Wall Street Journal.

The Wall Street Journal says that "noynoying" poses challenge to the current Philippine leader. The current leader has been caught laughing it up with celebrities instead of attending the impact of typhoons and other disasters. This has also a widespread perception that President Aquino might not be the most hands-on president to have led the Philippines.
